Changes to Sender ID Legislation in Australia
Recent changes introduced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) require all businesses to register their Alpha Sender IDs before they can be fully verified for use.
From 1 July 2026, any unregistered Sender ID will appear as “Unverified” on recipients’ devices, which may impact customer trust and message engagement.
What is an Alpha Sender ID?
An Alpha Sender ID is a branded sender name (e.g. your business name) that appears instead of a phone number when sending SMS messages.
Example:
- Instead of a number → “MillerStore” appears as the sender
Key characteristics:
- Displays your business or brand name
- Replies are not supported
- Must be registered with ACMA
- Helps customers recognise and trust your messages
What is a Verified Number?
A Verified Number is a mobile number that you own and verify within the platform.
Key characteristics:
- Messages are sent from a real mobile number
- Customers can reply directly
- Replies are received on your handset
- You are responsible for managing replies and opt-outs
Important: How This Affects Your Account
Ours is a multi-user platform, which means:
- Alpha Sender IDs are shared across the entire account
- Each Sender ID only needs to be registered once per account
- Only an authorised business representative should complete registration and identity verification
NOTE: Only Alpha Sender IDs need to be registered with ACMA. If you are sending with a Virtual or Verified Number, no action is required.
Instructions for Verifying Existing Alpha Sender IDs
If you already have Sender IDs saved in your account:
Go to:
Settings → Sender IDs
You will now see a Status column
If a Sender ID shows Unverified, click Verify
This will:
- Launch the registration form
- Pre-fill the Sender ID
- Prevent duplicate Sender IDs from being created
Complete the required details:
- Business Information
- Business Address
- Authorised Representative Details
Complete Identity Verification
You will see one of the following:
- Use a previously verified identity (if already completed)
- Verify a new identity (first-time setup)
Submit the registration
Instructions for Registering a New Alpha Sender ID
To register a brand new Sender ID:
Navigate to:
Settings → Sender IDs
Click:
Register an Australian Sender ID
Complete the registration form
Enter your new Sender ID
Submit the application
Identity Verification
To comply with ACMA requirements:
- The authorised representative must verify their identity
- A secure email will be sent after submission
- The representative must upload a government-issued photo ID
In the platform:
- Identity verification is only required once per account
- Once completed, it can be reused for future Sender ID registrations
What Happens Next
- Your Sender ID can still be used while approval is pending
- This transition period applies until 1 July 2026
- We submit your application to ACMA on your behalf
- You will receive an email once your Sender ID is approved
What Happens if You Don’t Register?
If your Sender ID is not registered:
- Messages may appear as “Unverified”
- Messages may be grouped with untrusted or scam messages on recipient devices
- Customer trust and engagement may be impacted
Best Practice
- Always use the Verify button for existing Sender IDs
- Only register a new Sender ID when creating one for the first time
- Ensure the Sender ID clearly matches your business name or brand
- Have the correct authorised representative complete the first registration
Summary
- Sender ID registration is now mandatory
- Edgility accounts only need to:
- Verify identity once
- Register each Sender ID once per account
- Existing Sender IDs can be quickly registered using the Verify button
- All unregistered Sender IDs must be compliant before 1 July 2026
